The situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border was examined at the session of the UN Security Council that was called by France, which presides over that structure. “France is concerned about the military operations on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as a result of which dozens of people were killed, civilian settlements and civil infrastructures were shelled on the territory of Armenia. We are talking about the largest military conflict since the war in 2020. Against the background of this tension, France is making efforts with its partners to maintain the ceasefire,” said the Permanent Representative of France to the UN, Nicolas de Riviere.
He added that President Macron was in negotiations with the Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of Azerbaijan, and also had conversations with his Armenian and Azerbaijani colleagues. The representative of France emphasized that Azerbaijani forces should return to their initial positions, and the demarcation and delimitation between Armenia and Azerbaijan should be carried out exclusively through negotiations and not through military clashes.
“The territorial integrity of Armenia must be preserved, the parties must activate the dialogue so that the issues can be resolved peacefully, without new incidents.” He called not to hinder the implementation of humanitarian operations, and also welcomed the return of 5 Armenian prisoners. He noted that as the co-chairman of the Minsk Group and an EU member state, France will make every effort to establish peace in the region, and also emphasized that the two countries should adhere to the tripartite agreement of November 9.
