“My next step as a diplomat is that I will report to my headquarters, the capitals, as soon as I go to Yerevan. This is our mission. At the same time, the EU delegation is trying to help the people within the framework of a specific program,” EU Ambassador to Armenia Andrea Wiktorin said in a briefing with journalists after seeing the consequences of the September 13 large-scale attack in the Gegharkunik region of Azerbaijan on September 29.
“You saw the atrocities with your own eyes, what is your assessment of all that?” asked the journalists, referring to the videos documenting the brutal torture by Azerbaijanis, including female soldiers.
Ambassador: “Let’s be precise. I didn’t see devastation, I saw damages: demolished, destroyed buildings. This is shocking. I saw some photos and the video you are referring to. That video is unacceptable. It should first be investigated according to the principles of international standards, and then we should voice opinions. As for the issue of missing persons and prisoners, we have worked and will continue to work in this direction. The USA is one of our partners, and there are also other member countries with which we conduct activities. We will not surrender, because the humanitarian component must be fulfilled.

As a result of the visit to several border villages of Gegharkunik region, Andrea Wiktorin noted that the targeting of civil-agricultural infrastructures is clear, that violence is reprehensible and should be discussed at the negotiation table. According to the ambassador, now they are discussing with the USA the possibilities of making changes in the humanitarian programs to be provided to Armenia, which relate to the cleaning of unexploded ordnance. Andrea Wiktorin also said that she was shocked by the fact that three Armenian servicemen were killed in the direction of Jermuk on September 28.
