“Which is more important to you: Azerbaijani gas or Armenian blood?”: Member of the European Parliament

October 06,2022 12:12

“Which is more important to you: Azerbaijani gas or Armenian blood?” a member of the European Parliament, Jordan Bardella, asked during a questioning session with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.

Continuing his speech, he mentioned, “Of course, I know the answer to this question, because the president of the European Commission signed a memorandum of understanding with the president of Azerbaijan, which plans to double the import of gas from Azerbaijan to Europe. A few days ago, we saw how Azerbaijani soldiers shot Armenian servicemen. With all this in mind, is Europe unable to make concrete decisions and take action? Or is the behavior of NATO member Turkey, which supports Azerbaijan, acceptable? How about that? Armenia is burning before our eyes, while we are looking the other way.”

In response, Josep Borrell stated, “I did not hear a question in your speech that would deserve an answer because the comparison of gas and blood is nonsense. This is a platform where we have to discuss serious issues, and to which I can seriously answer.” During the question-and-answer session with the head of EU foreign policy, all members of the European Parliament condemned Azerbaijan for carrying out aggression against the sovereign territory of Armenia.

Peter van Dalen, a member of the European Parliament representing the Netherlands, announced on this occasion, “This is a political platform, and we want to see specific political actions, not just good words. Azerbaijan is an aggressor, and we are not going to stop them only with political dialogue. We can stop the aggressor only with clear actions. For example, it may be to terminate the gas contract or at least to freeze it during this period. We cannot stop them only with statements.”

Josep Borrell asked what his question was and continued, “If you mean our will to stop, then I think not.” One of the delegates, Kostas Movridis, condemning Azerbaijan, said: “At midnight on September 12, the armed forces of Azerbaijan carried out a military attack against the sovereign territory of Armenia in seven directions. This is an aggression against Armenian sovereignty. Are you ready to discuss the issue of sanctions against Azerbaijan?”

Josep Borrell answered, “According to my information, no member country has put this issue on the table.”
