EU Member States agree on eighth sanctions package against Russia

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU High Representative Josep Borrell said on Twitter  that EU Member States had agreed on the 8th sanctions package against Russia.

The package proposed by the European Commission on 28 September includes further import bans on Russian products and is expected to deprive Moscow of an additional €7 billion in revenues. The EU will also extend export bans on key technology used for the military such as aviation items, electronic components and specific chemical substances.

“We have moved quickly and decisively,” von der Leyen wrote on Twitter. “We are determined to continue making the Kremlin pay.”

“With it, we are further limiting Russia‘s export capacities and imports feeding Putin’s war machine,” added Borrell.

tweet by the Czech Presidency at the Council of the European Union said a political agreement on new sanctions against Russia was “a strong EU response to Putin’s illegal annexation of Ukrainian territories“.

“Written procedure follows, sanctions enter into force on publication in the Official Journal,” the Czech Presidency added.
