The primary reason for emotional blunting

October 13,2022 15:11

A massive explosion occurred on the Kerch Bridge last week, which connects the Russian Krasnodar Krai to Crimea, annexed by the above-mentioned country in 2014. The reasons behind the explosion are yet to be revealed. Ukraine claims the incident to be an internal dispute among the Russian forces. Kremlin, obviously, blames the “Ukrainian terrorists”. If that is the case, it at least indicates that the corresponding Russian services are not guarding well enough the strategically important bridge that is under their control.

As a response to the explosion, Russia barbarically shelled dozens of Ukrainian civilian targets, including the capital Kyiv. This 2-3 hundred million dollars worth operation wasn’t solving any military problem, there were no specific changes on the front. Maybe their task was to scare the Ukrainians, and it is proven that as a consequence of these actions people don’t get scared but are filled with wrath.

But first and foremost I’m interested in the reaction of our society to this situation. The explosion of the bridge has caused great excitement in our so-called westernized circles. It seemed as though it was some turning point in the war, which could result in the capitulation of Russia the next day.

But more disappointing was the joy of these people in the shelling of peaceful civilian cities, which resulted in the loss of dozens of innocent civilians. In my book, that is another proof that our society has had its empathy “button” turned off, and people are seeing everything through the perspective of their political views and, more specifically, through the perspective of their groundless prejudices.

This emotional blunting is probably rooted in the social media reality when people live through their daily events “not having enough time” to give meaning, analyze and comprehend the purpose of those events.

For example, the shooting of unarmed Armenian POWs was forgotten in a day, being replaced by some viral article or speech.

I won’t be surprised if tomorrow they announce the dissolution of the state, that topic will be discussed just for one day. The next day they will be distracted by the marriage or divorce of some celebrity.
