The consequences of being loved or hated

November 05,2022 11:22

When we lost 800 hectare of Nagorno-Karabakh land as a result of the war in April of 2016, our nation was upset – how could they hand over such a huge piece of Armenian land? When the 44-day war of 2020 resulted in Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia losing a hundredfold of territory, it did not seem to upset the majority of our nation.

When Serzh Sargsyan led the process for signing an association agreement with the EU, and then in September 2013, unexpectedly announced that he was joining the Customs Union, the pro-Republican parties and palace intellectuals welcomed these drastic changes, and many people (myself included) found that “obedient excitement” humorous. Now, when Pashinyan makes arrangements in Europe, and then goes on to make excuses for that in the CSTO, pro-Civil Contract parties and propagandistic political scientists call it a “brilliant calculation”, yet no one finds it funny.

When Serzh Sargsyan was unanimously elected the president of the Republicans at the congress of said party, the rapturous standing ovation given by sycophants received mockery, at the very least. When after the Civil Contract congress, where Nikol Pashinyan was elected, sycophants’ applaud for that historical moment in the same “Brezhnev” manner was considered normal.

When MP Arakel Movsisyan or Nahapet Gevorgyan act inappropriately, the human right defenders protest and complain against the low intellectual level of the parliament. When the members of the Civil Contract bicker boorishly, no human right defender is bothered.

We can come to one definite conclusion. The previous authorities were despised by the majority of our citizens, whereas the current ones are likable, and when someone notices the defects of the latter, they are cautious about voicing them, because of the reaction they can receive from the society. Love and hated have both objective reasons and rational explanations. Whether the propaganda is done masterly or not has its role too. But I suppose the political behaviour of the majority is irrational. Or maybe the social sciences are not developed enough to help us find common patterns here.
