Qatar set for equity boom post tournament

Qatar is gearing up for a FIFA World Cup equity market boom as the country’s stock exchange is all set to benefit from the upcoming colossal event.

With more than $4bn of foreign inflows in the first 10 months of this year alone, equity market experts say that Qatar’s stock market, like most previous World Cup host markets, has outperformed peers in the run-up to the mega contest and is expected to continue along similar lines in the year after the tournament.

Tens of thousands of fans expected at first match

In a few hours, tens of thousands of fans will descend on Al Bayt Stadium. The venue with a capacity of 60,000 takes its name from “bayt al-sha’ar” – tents historically used by nomads in Qatar and the rest of the Gulf region.

The design of the stadium honours Qatar’s past and present while keeping an eye on the future of the community.

Al Bayt Stadium will host nine matches during the FIFA World Cup, including the opening fixture, five other group meetings and three knockout matches.

The stadium, located in Al Khor in northeastern Qatar, has a retractable roof.

Qatar’s long wait to host World Cup ends

Qatar won the bid to host this World Cup in 2010.

It has been a long wait for the country, with a flurry of corruption allegations and claims of Qatar “buying the World Cup” surfacing while the treatment of migrant workers has also been in the spotlight.

Qatar 2022: 12 years of development in lead-up to tournament
Twelve years after being awarded the right to host the World Cup, Qatar has transformed itself to ensure that fans from all over the world can attend the biggest sports event ever to take place in the Middle East.

The small country faced unprecedented challenges while racing against the clock.

Al Jazeera’s Resul Serdar reports.

Qatari fans ready to support team – and to win

The Maroons will be counting on the thousands of Qataris in the stands to support them as they lock horns with La Tri.

“We will win. We are playing home. More than 40,000 of our fans will support our team,” Fathi al-Yazidi told Al Jazeera at Al Bayt Stadium.

“Home advantage will be of great help. I think we will win 3- 1.”
