“The problem is that we have no alternative, and our homeland is at stake.” Artak Beglaryan answers Zhirayr Liparityan

December 19,2022 16:30

During the presentation of his book, Zhirayr Liparityan, the chief advisor to the President of RA from October 1994 to September 1997, Ambassador for Special Assignments, said: “When I was talking to Artak Beglaryan before the war, I said, ‘You don’t understand, the war will come, and we will lose, what will happen?

“I see a great chance that there will be a war,”‘ he said; we will fight and sacrifice as one man.” What, are you going to make a new Avarayr? We don’t need that new Avarayr.”

Artak Beglaryan, the adviser to the Minister of State of Artsakh, said during Aravot’s “Areresum” (Confrontation) program that he would answer that question in the same way now:

“The problem is that we have no alternative, and our homeland is at stake. Mr. Liparityan optimistically thinks that with any cooperation with Azerbaijan, it is possible to find a solution and keep the land for a long time, after decades, maybe centuries, to consider the complete return of the homeland, i.e., to take time. I am sure this is a justified, guaranteed loss of the homeland. And the other option, which is full of uncertainties and risks, as well as deprivations and sacrifices, has a certain probability that we can save the motherland. With great sacrifices, we can keep. That’s the question. I am in favor of a long-term and decisive struggle. And during our debate after the war, I told him:  I thought that, unfortunately, he would not see the recognition of the independence of Artsakh (unfortunately, sense of his age). The recognition by the entire international community, not individual countries, probably would take time. It is a decades-long struggle. Unfortunately, Mr. Liparityan will not see, but I am sure I will.”
