Transparent reviews and questionable propaganda

January 08,2023 10:33

It is clear what calculations the current authorities of Armenia are making. They think that the depopulation of Artsakh will be the price for which Azerbaijan and Turkey will allow us to live peacefully and safely here in the Republic of Armenia. I will not address the moral side of this calculation. The calculation seems to be wrong. If the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan demands “enclaves,” as a result of what Armenia’s strategic roads will be closed, and the leader of the same country talks about “Eastern Azerbaijan”, I do not doubt that no “era of peace” will begin after the depopulation of Artsakh.

But let’s say I’m wrong, and the power calculation is correct. Why doesn’t Prime Minister Pashinyan say it directly? I don’t think he has a problem with “public opinion.” Even if the prime minister declares that “for the sake of our children who will live happily in Armenia,” Yerevan should come under the control of Turkey, then hundreds of users will put a “heart” under that video and write “varchapet jan!!!”. And that is the leading indicator of effective management of this government.

However, the truth is not being told at the highest level for reasons beyond my understanding. Of course, it is pretty clear from the comments of CC MPs and so-called extra-parliamentary forces that the government’s tactic is to “exchange” the Armenian stay of Artsakh for the security of the Republic of Armenia. But these transparent hints are accompanied by, to say the least, highly questionable propaganda.

The main theses are: 1/ “Karabakh people have been robbing us for 30 years; therefore, they have inexhaustible resources”, 2/ “Karabakh people live at the expense of our taxes, what else do they want?”

As a means of justifying themselves to “proud citizens,” these theses are undoubtedly effective. But from the perspective of our nation’s historical perspective, extremely dangerous.
