“The current humanitarian situation in the region increases our concern day by day,” Prime Minister of Iceland Katrín Jakobsdóttir announced during the PACE plenary session in response to the question of Ruben Rubinyan, head of the Armenian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). Ruben Rubinyan’s question was about the blockade of Nagorno- Karabakh by Azerbaijan.
He said. “Last week, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe under the presidency of Iceland called for the reopening of the Lachin Corridor. Azerbaijan’s actions against Nagorno- Karabakh speak of its violation of statutory and contractual obligations. What steps will Iceland’s presidency take, such as monitoring mechanisms and political and legal procedures, to address this severe breach of its obligations by Azerbaijan?
Katrín Jakobsdóttir i said: “After the 2021 ceasefire, all parties agreed to work towards ensuring peace and stability in the South Caucasus, which will benefit all people living in that region. I would also like to mention that by becoming a member of this organization in 2001, Armenia and Azerbaijan undertook to find a peaceful solution to the conflict. And both countries must act following their commitments.”
She reminded that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iceland, now the Chairman of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, issued a statement calling for restoring communication and transportation through that corridor. Also, the CE Committee of Ministers expressed concern for the unstable humanitarian situation due to the one-month blockade. The Prime Minister of Iceland said: “What can I say? Indeed, dialogue is the key to avoiding further deterioration of the situation. The Committee of Ministers will continue to follow the developments, but this is not an easy case.”
