The discussion on the Lachin Corridor at the regular PACE session showed the attitude of the international and Armenian powers toward the events taking place in our region. First of all, let’s give credit to all the members of the Armenian delegation. However, they did not reach the most desirable outcome for us, the resolution calling for the corridor opening; still, in all cases, the speeches of our delegates were to the point and meaningful. I’m sure their work behind the scenes was also practical.
It is noteworthy what kind of tactics the Azerbaijani delegation chose. The deputies representing that country sought to divert the PACE’s attention from the road blockade to the Russian-Ukrainian war and the anti-Russian theme close to the hearts of Europeans. They were repeating the thesis of the “pro-Western” supporters of the Armenian authorities that the corridor was not closed by Azerbaijan but by Russia.
The subject of Ruben Vardanyan is easily placed within the framework of that tactic, where the main theses are that Putin sent Vardanyan (which the supporters of the RA authorities also believe); without him, peace will be established in Artsakh. It is natural that if there are Armenians who say: “We have been defeated; let’s surrender.” There are Armenians who say: “We have not been defeated; let’s not surrender,” then the goal of the opponents and their supporters should be to discredit the second group.
Ukrainian delegates in PACE, as well as official Kyiv, also support the Azerbaijani-Turkish point of view. For example, Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to the President of Ukraine, recently stated that the consequences of the blockade of Nagorno- Karabakh are exaggerated. But I don’t want to blame the Ukrainians. They are waging a life-and-death struggle against the Russian army that has invaded their territory and is killing civilians in their cities daily. Naturally, they think what can harm Russia is helpful for their country.
