In August 1992, when Artsvashen fell into the hands of the enemy, and the situation on the Artsakh front was critical, Defense Minister Vazgen Sargsyan took the initiative to create a military regiment of martyrs. Now let’s leave aside all the historical parallels (because the situations are not comparable); just for the sake of thought, let’s assume that someone makes such a battle cry today. In the exact second, several “brigades” of “haters” will appear on Facebook, who will “explain” that this person is doing it for money, position, Russians, or Americans.
We don’t believe in anyone’s sincerity; we don’t trust anyone, be it a state, political figure, clergyman, or intellectual. In that sense, the current prime minister, who, according to popular perception, inherited the state looted by the “formers,” does not have an advantage in that regard. Although a person with such a perception receives the sympathy of the “popular masses” and some support (against the “formers”), he cannot unite the society and organize resistance in any way.
That situation, in my opinion, is explained by many “pains” (stereotypes, prejudices) of our society, of which two are the most important. 1/ there must be traitors, foreign agents, and “fifth columns” among us; 2/ our state is ruled from outside; we need to choose the right “outside” rulers who will ensure our prosperous and carefree life.
Added to that is one of our national characteristics. When someone says something, our immediate reaction is: “What have you put yourself in the place of a sage? Do you consider yourself the smartest among us?”
