Problems revealed by Munich

February 21,2023 14:00

The Pashinyan-Aliyev debate at the Munich Security Conference (with the participation of Garibashvili ) revealed several issues. Let me list them from least important to most important.

1/ The language problem. The Prime Minister of Armenia knows enough English (and Russian) to communicate with any foreigner. But when it comes to a lecture or a debate, you need a high level of language skills to express your thoughts accurately and fluently.

2-nd/ Excessive self-confidence: To participate in such debates, it is necessary to do some preparatory work. The First Person of the State, as well as the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and other officials, should have at hand specific topics – packages developed by specialists, which have already been tested on various platforms and which need constant updating. Armenia has answers to “30 years of occupation”, “not fulfilling the four resolutions of the UN Security Council,” “destroying mosques,” and many other accusations. (By the way, in the summer of 2020, in an interview within the framework of Hardtalk, the same Pashinyan tried to present the theses developed by Armenia regarding those sinister resolutions, but after losing the war, these theses were forgotten).

The Prime Minister probably thinks he is an expert in everything; he does not need such “packages” and can give the necessary answers without preparation. Internal political debates, where the prime minister and his team easily “win,” are the basis for such self-confidence. It is enough to say: “you are a robber,” “you have already surrendered Artsakh,” and the delight of the respective electorate is ensured. International relations and diplomacy are much more complicated, and you will not solve the issue here with one or two populist exclamations. Of course, the same electorate is also happy about the debate with Aliev: mer hzor varchapety Alievin haxtec (our powerful prime minister defeated Aliyev), but, unfortunately, that happiness does not improve the situation of the Republic of Armenia and Artsakh.

3 -rd/ Conceptual Bolshevik approach. Any leader of modern Armenia is responsible for the entire course of the Third Republic. In particular, for the first Artsakh war and the so-called “occupation.” To get rid of the past, claiming that before 2018 there was no state, army, economy, education, or culture means to attack statehood.

In Munich, Aliyev said that since the citizens of Armenia elected the defeated government in 2021, they have come to terms with the defeat. That was also worth responding to.
