In a press conference with journalists, the third President of RA, Serzh Sargsyan, referring to the statement of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, said: “The Chancellor of Germany approached the problem with German punctuality. We signed an enhanced cooperation agreement with the EU in 2017, subsequently ratified by all EU member states. And the Chancellor of Germany could not say anything else because his country’s parliament had approved that agreement, where the part concerning Karabakh was the declaration of the Minsk group, the person could not say anything else.
Another thing the main negotiator avoids is running away from the word self-determination, like the devil from incense, so he does not give any response and starts talking about some rights again. There will likely be no European country that will speak about Karabakh being part of Azerbaijan. At least it won’t happen in the foreseeable future because it would contradict the agreement’s provisions ratified by its parliament.” Is it possible to make a breakthrough in the negotiation process, and if you were the head of the country, where would you start that change?
Serzh Sargsyan responded, “I have announced that I will never be again; I don’t want to talk about ifs. Second, the negotiator must change. A negotiator cannot succeed when the other person has publicly compared him to a dirty rag, to a drunk, drunken clown; why should such a person seriously talk about something? Such a person must claim only. And then, in reality, we did not negotiate with the Azerbaijanis; we negotiated with mediators because we had nothing to negotiate with the Azerbaijanis. They want everything to be theirs and even more.”
