Short-term thinking

April 06,2023 10:30

Any person endowed with intelligence understands that the status he has at the moment is temporary, transitory; today I am rich, tomorrow I may be poor, today I am in one business, tomorrow I will be in another one, today I have power, tomorrow I will not have it, today I live, tomorrow I will die.

That elementary truth motivates a rational person to have, receive or acquire what he will not lose under any circumstances, what no one can take away from him, and maybe even remain after death. For one, it is charity; for another, it is knowledge; for the third one, it is memories; for the next, it is a good reputation. For each one, it is something different.

I believe that people of faith realize this more deeply than non-believers. But the debate on this issue would take us too far, and therefore please accept this last claim as a mere hypothesis.

For the authorities, especially in non-established states, this consciousness is alien. They strive for eternal status; for this purpose, they change constitutions, reset deadlines, and others. And for the same reason, they behave as if they will rule forever; they are convinced that they have occupied these positions for life, and they assume that no one will demand an account for their actions during their lifetime.

In addition to the disease of the authorities familiar to the world, we also have the peculiarity of the current Armenian authorities: short-term thinking.

Not only does it increase, but it stems from that disease. If I think I will rule for life, I will always live in a position; then it is not essential what legacy I will leave; no one will call me for responsibility. Short-term thinking is the result of that delusion. The main concern is how to get “likes” from people at that moment. And what will happen after that is not essential.

According to that logic, you can take a selfie near an expensive but useless plane without adequate ammunition. You can cut down an ash tree and plant a sakura in its place, which will bloom beautifully for one or two weeks a year but not have any functional significance. But the most important thing is to take a picture against the background of blooming sakura for one or two weeks. And after that, there will be other topics to occupy people.
