Miserable and colorless “pragmatism”

May 09,2023 10:33

It is too late to argue about how appropriate the placement of the ”Nemesis” monument was. Before Turkey’s ultimatum, the topic could become a subject of discussion. After 1991, when the Armenian state existed, personal revenge against our enemies was no longer relevant and unacceptable. On the other hand, in general dulling of national feelings, people, especially young people, should be reminded that the meaning of life is not in “living well” and eating and drinking, that there were and are devotees who are guided by other values.

That, contrary to official claims, we had an army, and the efforts of such devotees created that army That, contrary to official claims, we had an army, and the efforts of such devotees created that army and to remind with monuments or by other means should be thought about later. But not now, when Turkey has decided to humiliate us again, demanding the dismantling of the monument and blackmailing us by closing the airspace.

I am sure that Turkey initially did not intend to improve the relations between our two countries, establish diplomatic relations and open the border. And there will always be excuses for humiliating blackmail for us. Let’s suppose that our government decides to meet the demand of the Turks and dismantle the monument (perhaps they will, if they are more afraid of Turkey’s unfriendliness than Armenian public opinion). Will this further national humiliation bring any benefit in purely pragmatic terms?- Of course not.

Turkey will open the airspace for a couple of weeks, but then it will make a new demand, which will close again if it is not fulfilled. Azerbaijan has put more than a dozen demands on us; Turkey can take one of them and close the airspace again based on it. Of course, the attitude of the Armenian government is interesting. They are almost apologizing to the Turks that we still remember the Genocide.

Today is Victory Day, which used to combine the victory in the Great Patriotic War and the liberation of Shushi in 1992. It is clear that taking into account the moods that exist in our society and more over the attitude of the Armenian authorities, the celebration of the liberation of the “unfortunate, unhappy city” is, to put it mildly, reinterpreted.

If the government representatives say that we did not have an Armenian army until 2018, this means that the non-existent army could not have won victories. This rejection of the past serves two purposes.

First, to present the story in such a way that it started in 2018, and before that, the country was immersed in the darkness of lawlessness and corruption. Secondly, we do not particularly provoke the same Turks and Azerbaijanis with references to our previous victories and to appear as impoverished as possible to achieve progress in the negotiations.

This policy, implemented for two and a half years, did not bring any positive results.
