“Everything is pathos and declamation”

May 10,2023 10:30

Questioning something is generally a sign of healthy thinking. Without critical thinking, progress is impossible. But, like any other phenomenon, in its extreme manifestations, “suspicion” loses its essential healthy core and becomes widespread rejections. And in that case, it turns out that everything is a lie; there are no ideas, no ideals, and everything is meaningless, pathos and declamation.

“Let’s not talk about the danger of losing Artsakh, losing Syunik – all that is empty talk; it’s lyric. Let’s focus on strengthening the country.” (Of course, under the skillful leadership of the leader who “strengthened” that country). It is a very “adequate and deep” approach. According to that approach, everything that exists in the Armenian public and political mind, and not only for 35 but also for 150 years, was all “national-liberation pointless games ” under the veil of which looters oppressed the people.

Therefore, by “adequate analysis,” we will start everything from a clean page, building such relations with the Turks and Azerbaijanis as the Germans and the French have now. According to that, “false patriots who stifle pathos” demonize our “honest neighbors,” claiming that they want to eliminate Armenian statehood; in fact, their intentions are supposedly very pure, according to “pragmatists,” Turkey and Azerbaijan want to establish an ordinary neighborhood with us. This is the “adequate analysis.” To be sure, it is a very “realistic” approach.

It is not just “one point of view”; it is targeted propaganda ultimately directed against our national identity. If we are consistent in this refusal, perhaps it was not worth starting the 1988 Movement. Maybe our “realists” will conclude that there was no genocide in 1915, that Dadivank is an “Aghvan-Udian” monument, or that Mesrop Mashtots made a mistake by creating the Armenian script and should have been content with Greek.

․․․This year marks the 100th anniversary of my university, Yerevan Komitas Conservatory. I am afraid that this anniversary will not be celebrated because it will be revealed that there was no Armenian music until 2018.
