“Armenian prisoners were brutally beaten by the military police of Azerbaijan. These were compounded by food deprivation, sleep, and exposure to weather conditions, causing additional suffering. For example, especially in cold weather, they were artificially placed in such conditions as to cause additional suffering due to freezing,” said lawyer Siranush Sahakyan, representing the interests of Armenian prisoners at the ECHR.
The “Tatoyan” Foundation has published a new report regarding the Azerbaijani attack on Jermuk on September 13-14, 2022. The report was prepared jointly with Siranush Sahakyan. According to Siranush Sahakyan, this way of working towards Armenian captives was carried out under the control of Azerbaijani special services, and more intensive and inhumane treatment was shown to captured Armenians in the detention places, where the superiority of Azerbaijanis over the Armenian ethnic group was emphasized by insulting the national self-esteem.
After the 2020 war, the Azerbaijani side continues to cause additional suffering to the families of the persons under their control by spreading various videos of torture and humiliation. Civilians and medical workers are also involved in the poor treatment of Armenian prisoners.
“Military or civilian doctors who dealt with servicemen used violence. In recent incidents, we have many testimonies that prisoners of war were handed over to civilians. For example, on the way to Baku, they stopped in a village where civilians were gathered, rolled the prisoner out of the car, and threw him down in front of the gathered Azerbaijanis, who used violence.”
