Armenia to confirm steps towards its international and domestic responsibilities aimed at prevention of discrimination and women’s rights equality with adoption of draft

May 17,2023 12:44

The development of the draft is conditioned by the necessity to eliminate the ambiguities in the current law and to reduce the obstacles for the women candidates in the management of the Public Broadcaster, as well as in the state regulatory bodies. The NA deputy Lilit Galstyan stated about this.

The draft law on Making Amendments and Addenda to the Law on Audiovisual Media authored by the deputies Lilit Galstyan and Elinar Vardanyan was debated at May 16 sitting of the RA NA Standing Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Diaspora, Youth and Sport.

According to Lilit Galstyan, Armenia has joined a number of international conventions and agreements for years, committing to ensure maximum representation and full equality of women. According to her, we have wonderfully trained women who can represent the public interests.

The draft proposed that the representation of any gender in the management of the Public Broadcaster, as well as in the regulatory state bodies, should not be less than two.

Welcoming the proposed amendment, the deputy Hasmik Hakobyan offered her colleagues to change the minimum representation of one gender to three instead of two.

The Deputy Chair of the Committee Taguhi Ghazaryan welcomed the proposed amendment as well, suggesting to debate the proposal of the deputy Hasmik Hakobyan in working order.

The RA Deputy Minister of High-Tech Industry Avet Poghosyan mentioned that the Government is in favor of the bill.

The draft was endorsed. It will be proposed to the NA Council to include it in the draft agenda of the fifth session of the eighth convocation of the National Assembly on 23 May 2023.
