On May 7th, Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention co-founders and presidents, Elisa von Joeden-Forgey and Irene Victoria Massimino, travelled to the Lachin Corridor to witness the new Azerbaijani checkpoint on the only road linking the Armenian enclave of Artsakh to the rest of the world.
They were joined by the Argentine lawyer Luciana Minassian and the Center for Law & Justice “Tatoyan” Foundation.
As a result of this trip, the Lemkin Institute is issuing warnings to all Western leaders who are overseeing “peace” talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia that they may be complicit in genocide if they broker the transfer of Artsakh and Artskah’s population (which is over 99 percent Armenian) to Azerbaijan, which will result in a human catastrophe.
The Lemkin Institute wrote an open letter to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, to denounce the continuous disregard of the blockade by the European Union. Granting Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev near complete impunity to do as he pleases with the 4000-year-old indigenous Armenian community that has never before been under Azerbaijani control and turning a blind eye to the Azerbaijani and Turkish dictatorships for geopolitical and resources could end up in complicity in genocide.

We believe that the complicity of international actors in this slow genocide is illegal and immoral, especially in a world where we have very refined early warning and genocide prevention protocols that Western leaders (as well as Russia) are ignoring for reasons of self-interest (both geopolitical and economic). If genocide could be legitimized and legalized for oil or strategic access to regions such as Central Asia, there would be no illegal genocides in history.
If the world allows Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to continue to operate in impunity against Armenia, this will spell the end of multilaterialism and will give a green light to dictators everywhere who are watching and waiting to see if there will be consequences for the genocidal policies of the Azeri dictator.
