Urgent discussion on the issue of the Lachin Corridor in PACE: the rebuttals of the Azerbaijanis “didn’t work”

June 21,2023 12:00

The PACE summer session has started in Strasbourg. The Assembly discussed the proposal of the PACE Bureau to organize a discussion under an urgent procedure on the topic “Ensuring free and safe access through the Lachin Corridor.”

PACE President Tiny Kox announced whether the Assembly favors discussing the Lachin issue. Samad Seyidov the head of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE, announced: “I protest. An organizing discussion on this topic can cause more headaches. For the first time in the history of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, we have come so close to peace that this intervention can have a negative effect. On behalf of our delegation, I declare that it is not the right time to discuss this issue.”

Ruben Rubinyan, the head of the Armenian delegation at PACE, also expressed his support for organizing a discussion on the Lachin issue and justified it. “Even though Armenia and Azerbaijan are negotiating on the issue of peace, any kind of discussion that concerns humanitarian issues, the crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh, is important and cannot harm the negotiations.”

The Bureau’s proposal to hold an urgent procedure discussion on “Ensuring free and safe access through the Lachin Corridor” was put to the vote.

Of the 94 delegates who participated in the voting, 73 were in favor, 15 were against, and six abstained. The issue of organizing an urgent discussion on the Lachin Corridor was put on the PACE agenda. It will be organized on Thursday at the PACE plenary session.
