The Parable of the 18th Camel

July 05,2023 10:33

The Prime Minister and then the Civil Contract deputies can calmly state that they recognize the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, including Artsakh, for one reason only; they think that they will rule forever and will never bear responsibility for this violation of the RA Constitution.

For the same reason, the Supreme Judicial Council is busy filtering out judges “disloyal” to the regime and doing it in the style of the and does it in the manner of Stalin’s “threes”-“troika” behind closed doors. In addition to the illusion of “ruling forever,” in this case, there is also a reasonable confidence that the European institutions, which are supposed to promote democracy in our country, will record that such practices are entirely standard and correspond to all kinds of advanced European and global standards. The hidden message of those structures, which is addressed to the political authorities, is the following: “Just insult the Russians and the rest will be forgiven.”

But the moment to answer will come sooner or later. Even personalized (personalistic) autocracies, such as the regimes of Putin, Erdogan, Aliyev, and Pashinyan, eventually collapse. Prigodzin’s rebellion in Russia showed that such powers could collapse from “unexpected places.”

The question is how the collapse process will take place. I assume that after the removal of Putin in Russia, what is called a “time of turmoil” (“смутное время”) in that country will begin, which may last decades. We cannot afford such luxury. And what can prevent a period of uncertainty or turbulence? My answer may sound strange, but I think that such a role can be played by ideas, which will be combined with real (not imitation) freedom, universal values, and national dignity, as well as our ideals formed in the course of history, which are now “officially”  ridiculed.

I remembered an old Arabic story (or maybe a riddle) on that occasion. The father dies and bequeaths his 17 camels to his three sons. One leaves half of that inheritance, another 1/3, and the third 1/9. The sons are confused about how to divide 17 into 2, 3, and 9. The traveler appears and says: I will solve your problem by providing one of my camels. The sons divide the 18 camels, as the father bequeathed, after which the traveler sits on his camel and leaves.

I suggest readers solve this simple arithmetic problem. Note that the “18th camel” is an allegory of an idea that solves a problem. If there is no such idea, then those in the state, behind who are the courts, the police, the prosecutor’s office, and investigative bodies, will continue to do what they want.
