“Please return my father,” Vera Khachatryan, the daughter of Vagif Khachatryan, who was abducted near the Hakari Bridge, appealed to the UN Armenia office on July 31. She stated that she had not heard from her father, and although the International Committee of the Red Cross noted that representatives of the ICRC visited Vagif Khachatryan.

He was given the opportunity to contact family members, but the daughter said that the family members did not speak to her father. “Neither my sister, mother, nor our relatives have contacted my father. We have no information. On the first day, the Red Cross called my sister and said he was in the Baku hospital, which seemed like good news, but do I want him to be in the hospital in Baku? I want my father to be treated in his homeland.”

Vera Khachatryan said that her father had severe heart problems and was being transferred to Armenia for surgery. The daughter tearfully said: “He had to undergo open heart surgery. We don’t even know what his condition is, is my father alive, has his heart survived or not?” In Azerbaijan, Vagif Khachatryan was accused of “killing Azerbaijanis, forcibly evicting them and destroying state property” in Meshali village of Khojaly in 1991.

Vera Khachatryan denied that her father, as one of the media wrote, was Samvel Babayan’s driver. “It is fake news.  “Azerbaijan spreads information that does not correspond to reality.”

Regarding the accusation brought in Azerbaijan, Vera Khachatryan said: “Whoever knows my father knows that he is quite a balanced, reserved, kind person. Even if he was given such an assignment, he would not even behave like that towards an Azerbaijani. My father led a dignified life. They are spreading some photos in Azerbaijan as pictures of my father’s youth. It’s not my father; I don’t know whose picture they are posting. Please, you must help me bring my father back safely; you are my father, each of you.”
