“The UN should adopt a decisive resolution regarding the difficult situation created in Artsakh.” Demonstrations outside the embassies of France and Great Britain

The UN Security Council should adopt a resolution regarding the problematic situation in Artsakh. With this call, on August 29, the “Opening” (Batsum)  initiative members demonstrated near the embassies of France and Great Britain, permanent members of the UN Security Council.

The authors of the initiative directly appealed to French President Emmanuel Macron, a leader dedicated to the principles of peace, human rights, and international law, in front of the French Embassy so that an immediate session of the UN Security Council be convened under his leadership, as the situation in Artsakh requires quick, decisive actions by international structures.

“Dear President Macron, given your commitment to humanitarian action and your unwavering support for the peace and security of our peoples, as well as the mission of the United Nations and the high values and principles espoused by France, we call for the adoption of a decisive resolution addressing the following vital points:

First is the transfer of humanitarian aid, to immediately deliver humanitarian assistance through the Berdzor (Lachin) corridor. Timely action is critical to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation. Urgent steps are essential to prevent further damage to the humanitarian crisis. Alternative ways denigrate the free expression of the people of Artsakh and legitimize the blocking of the vital corridor disrupted by Azerbaijan and its sponsors, insidiously changing the essence of the problem from a political one to a purely humanitarian one.

Second, opening the Berdzor Corridor and ensuring its continuity, opening the Berdzor Corridor to ensure the delivery of the necessary humanitarian aid to the Armenian people of Artsakh, creating guarantees for its further uninterrupted operation. This lifeline is essential to alleviate Armenians’ suffering and meet the population’s basic needs.

Third, confirmation of responsibility, citing the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of December 9, 1948, to hold the leadership of Azerbaijan and its accomplices accountable for subjecting the Armenian people of Artsakh to genocide. The international community must be united against such heinous violations and torture.

Fourth, the restoration of violated rights, affirming the rights of the Armenian people of Artsakh, including their inalienable right to life and political self-determination. As a fundamental principle of international law, this cornerstone principle should be recognized and respected.

The Armenian people of Artsakh face the challenges of intimidation, subjugation of free will, expulsion, and genocide by Azerbaijan and its patrons through unprecedented hunger and blockade. Your dedication to the welfare and safety of humanity is a beacon of hope. We call on you to continue to invest invaluable efforts for the sake of international unity, in providing humanitarian aid to the Armenian people of Artsakh, in the protection of rights, sovereignty and dignity”, says the appeal of the “Opening” initiative.

The initiative’s members sent letters to the embassies requesting to deliver them to the countries’ leaders.

The members of the “Opening” initiative will hold similar demonstrations on August 30 near the embassies of the United States and China, permanent members of the UN Security Council.
