Arthur Martirosyan: “Getting rid of Russia may cost us dearly.” “Confrontation” (“Areresum”)

October 02,2023 11:22

In the message of the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA), there was a reminder that after the 2020 war, US President Joe Biden did not send any aid to Artsakh through USAID. He did not provide any assistance to the besieged Artsakh.

“But he sent photographers to show his compassion for refugees and helped Azerbaijan carry out ethnic cleansing in Artsakh- No help to Artsakh.” But there is no shortage of photographers. He spent more money on the visit of USAID head Samantha Power and photographers to Armenia than on humanitarian aid programs in Artsakh in the last three years.”

Arthur Martirosyan, a conflict expert and negotiation expert hosted on the Aravot “Confrontation” (“Areresum”) program, reminded us of the phrase too little too late. “Too little and too late.”

They did everything to achieve their goal. That was their goal. A historical opportunity was created to push the Russians out of the region, and they were doing everything for it. They saw Artsakh and Armenian-Turkish relations as an obstacle. They said: solve those two, and after that, there will be peace, which Mr. Pashinyan says. He says what diplomats of the United States have been saying for years: solve those two problems, and you will get rid of Russia. Now, that release may cost us dearly; that is the problem. We are now similar to the popular Ukrainian film “Chasing Two Rabbits.” Now, Mr. Pashinyan is chasing two rabbits. And he can enmity someone – the enmity has already started. And he needs to get what he expects from the second one. And that help will come again too little and too late when it will be difficult to fix what happened on the ground.”

During the conversation, in the context of the public’s attitude to the defeat and the depopulation of Artsakh, the questions raised by political scientist Sergey Markedonov were addressed. “Does Pashinyan have strong support in the world for the Armenian victory?” No. Is there a mobilization of Armenian society ready to go and register as a volunteer, as it was in the 1990s when the Yerkhapah Volunteer Union was created? Is there a new Vazgen Sargsyan today? And why isn’t there? Because people get tired of conflicts, and “demobilization” of the society occurs.

“The history of the last 30 years shows that we are moving towards a more liberal system where materialism is important: we will live well, we must live well… And that good living is based on what values, what will it mean? And if you tell people that we should live well, that is the goal of our life; they say that you can live well in hundreds of other countries. In other words, what should I fight for? What should I sacrifice for the common good if you are living well and I am not? It is a very complicated issue; it’s not like you can say whether these are guilty or they are guilty. But we have to understand what we want in the end. And if we want to have a truly national state, we must understand that a state has not been created anywhere and will not be created here either, based on those values that are propagated by our authorities. And without the state, we will lose our identity here and turn into a mere territory.”
