Globally Celebrated Artists Invited to Yerevan to be Part of the “Armenia” International Music Festival

The Korean pianist Yekwon Sunwoo is a laureate of a number of international competitions and has performed at leading concert halls around the world, such as the Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall and Elbphilharmonie. In his own words, the pianist “strives to reach for the truth and pure beauty in music.

Yekwon Sunwoo was a recent guest in Yerevan as a performing artist at the 7th “Armenia” International Music Festival. Accompanied by the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, the pianist played the piano concerto “Travel Notebook” by Alexey Shor.

This was the artist’s first performance of this concerto, even though he had previously played other works by Shor. “The “Travel Notebook” comprises seven lyrical parts with harmonious progression, which are deeply touching and evoke strong emotions. This is my debut performance with the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, although I’ve heard that Shor’s compositions are frequently featured in the orchestra’s repertoire,” Yekwon Sunwoo stated, expressing hope that the Armenian audience would find his interpretation of the “Travel Notebook” concerto interesting.

This year, the 7th “Armenia” International Music Festival is being held from September 14 to October 11, hosting a number of celebrated guest artists, including violinists Stephen Waarts, Xiaozhuo Wang and Marc Bouchkov, pianists Yekwon Sunwoo, Zee Zee and cellist Gabriel Schwabe, as well as renowned conductors Roeland Henkens, Ricardo Casero, Sergey Smbatyan, Daniel Boico, and John Warner.

The concert program of the festival featured works by Aram Khachaturian, Yervand Yerkanyan, Gagik Hovunts, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Edward Mirzoyan, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Alexander Borodin, among others.

The 7th annual “Armenia” International Music Festival is held with the support of the Tourism Committee of the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Armenia․ It’s remarkable that the festival concerts are attended not only by local enthusiasts of classical music, but also by large numbers of tourists. The festival provides a unique opportunity for many tourists to enjoy performances of globally celebrated artists in Armenia and become acquainted with the works of contemporary classical composers.
