The meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev will not take place in Brussels at the end of October, said Toivo Klaar, EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, during the “Progress in Uncertainty” conference hosted by APRI Armenia NGO.
The European diplomat was participating remotely in the forum in Yerevan. That a tripartite meeting is possible in Brussels at the end of October was announced by the President of the Council of the European Union, Charles Michel, within the framework of the European Political Community Summit in Granada, in which the President of Azerbaijan refused to participate. Speaking about the cancellation of the meeting, Toivo Klaar gave the reason that the problem was the need for more time.
“Our goal is for the Armenians of Karabakh to return to their homes. Emphasizing the meeting in Granada, which Aliyev did not participate in, we are now trying to organize a meeting between Pashinyan and Aliyev in Brussels. Despite the slow process, we believe that the result will be the signing of the document.” Toivo Klaar did not mention possible new dates for the meeting.
The European diplomat also referred to the recently held “3+3” format meeting in Tehran, expressing the opinion that although this format cannot solve the problem, it can be helpful. He does not see a contradiction between the meetings organized in the “3+3” format and on the Brussels platform. A question was asked from the Armenian audience to the European official: if there is a new attack on Armenia, how will the European Union react? The EU representative answered. “Hypothetical questions are dangerous. An important point should be the borders of sovereign states.”
