“We do not provide monitoring results to Armenia or Azerbaijan, but only to the EU headquarters.” Markus Ritter, the head of the EU Civilian Monitoring Mission in Armenia (EUMA), said at the “Progress in Uncertainty” conference of “APRI Armenia.” He detailed that they inform Baku about their activities to avoid misunderstandings.
Asked if the US could join the mission, Markus Ritter urged the US to ask the question. And ask Brussels what position the mission members presented in their report last year during the September events when Azerbaijan attacked Jermuk. The mission includes 103 people.
“Our task is to become the eyes and ears of the EU in the region,” said Ritter, detailing that there are no military personnel among the observers; there are former policemen and border guards.
“Out of 27 EU countries, representatives of 24 countries are included in the mission. We hope others will join; there are vacancies. The mission, based on the existing arrangements, will operate until December 2025,” said the head of the mission.
