Features of the “Beacon of Democracy”

November 08,2023 10:00

The Armenian authorities and their supporters, including their supporting non-governmental organizations, claim that they do not persecute anyone in our country for political reasons. I partially agree with that. If we understand the struggle for power in politics, then (let no one be offended) no opposition, no political or public figure poses a severe threat to the government at this time.

The pursuits seem more like a personal vendetta. Since the primary source of world perception of our authorities and, in particular, the Prime Minister is Facebook, everything depends on how much Pashinyan and his close circle consider themselves hurt by this or that post or speech. For example, according to everything, Armen Ashotyan could break Pashinyan’s arrogation with his speeches, and the latter gave a corresponding instruction to the repressive apparatus in his pocket.

Or, it is not possible to imprison Robert Kocharyan (due to the lack of professionalism of the same repressive apparatus or because of Putin’s mediation), so you can try to get rid of Levon Kocharyan. By the way, the “reformed” courts are also included in the apparatus above. Another issue is that these persecutions, although in the true sense of the word, are not political; conversely, they have nothing to do with legitimacy and democracy.

What does it mean, for example, to selectively dig up “dangerous” Facebook posts on the apparent instructions of the “boss” and initiate criminal prosecution on the occasion of them? Every day, thousands of profanities and threats are published in the Armenian section of social networks. When government supporters curse, insult, or threaten, it is considered quite normal. But when Avetik Ishkhanyan wrote “Death to the Traitors,” it came to the attention of law enforcement officers.

Armenia seems to be considered a “beacon of democracy” in the West. But no, they don’t think so. They announce, declare. Probably, there is something they like about Armenia’s foreign policy. Tomorrow, when they don’t like it, they will say it is a “Bastion of Dictatorship.”
