Meeting of the Foreign Minister of Armenia in the Standing Committee on Foreign Relations of the House of Representatives of the Netherlands

On February 7, in The Hague, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan had a meeting with Raymond de Roon, the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives (Parliament) of the Netherlands, and members of the committee representing the majority of parliamentary parties.

The Foreign Minister of Armenia noted that Armenia is on the path of democratic reforms, the achievements of which have been reflected in the relevant international indexes.

Touching upon the security situation in the South Caucasus, Minister Mirzoyan presented to the parliamentarians the vision of Armenia on establishing stability and peace in the region and the efforts undertaken in that direction. The Minister noted that the constructive approach of Armenia does not always receive an appropriate response, emphasizing the need for the relevant political will and clear commitment from the Azerbaijani side. Ararat Mirzoyan emphasized the key principles of the Armenia-Azerbaijan normalization process, including the importance of unequivocal respect for territorial integrity and inviolability of borders.

In the context of unblocking regional transport and economic communications, Ararat Mirzoyan noted that the four principles of sovereignty, jurisdiction, reciprocity and equality, that are important to Armenia, got their best reflection in the “Crossroads of Peace” project developed by the Government of the Republic of Armenia, which was presented and received the attention of international partners.

The Foreign Minister of Armenia also answered the questions of the parliamentarians of the Netherlands on regional developments, addressing the needs and rights of the forcibly displaced Armenians resulting from the ethnic cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh. Questions touched upon also strengthening the Armenia-EU partnership and other topics of mutual interest.

During the meeting, the readiness to further deepen cooperation between Armenia and the Netherlands was touched upon, including at the level of parliamentarians, as well as within the Armenia-EU format, aiming to support stability in the region and ensure the well-being of Armenia’s citizens.

Foreign Minister of Armenia participated in the discussion held at the Clingendael Institute

On February 7, in the Hague, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan participated in a round-table discussion at the Clingendael Institute of International Relations, one of the prestigious analytical centers of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Experts and journalist-analysts attended the discussion.

During the discussion, Minister Mirzoyan thoroughly presented the current security situation in the South Caucasus and the peculiarities of the normalization process of the Armenia-Azerbaijan relations. The negotiation process on the draft peace treaty was touched upon. Minister Mirzoyan noted, on the one hand, the steps and proposals made by Armenia towards the draft peace treaty, and, on the other hand, Azerbaijan’s maximalist claims to delay the process.

Minister Mirzoyan emphasized the need for unequivocal recognition of territorial integrity and ensuring maximum clarity for further delimitation process based on the Alma-Ata Declaration and the most recent maps of the USSR General Staff. In the context of unblocking regional transport and economic communications, the Foreign Minister of Armenia emphasized the inadmissibility of any “corridor” logic for the Republic of Armenia and the repeatedly voiced readiness to provide the necessary facilitated mechanisms that will operate exclusively under the sovereignty and jurisdiction of the Republic of Armenia.

In this regard, the “Crossroads of Peace” concept developed by the Government of Armenia was touched upon, which implies the creation of effective ways and conditions connecting the North with the South and the East with the West, also as a guarantee of stability in the South Caucasus.

Minister Mirzoyan also answered questions of the attendees. Touching upon the deepening of the Armenia-EU partnership, the Minister noted that the relations of Armenia with the European integration structure are based on common values and democratic principles and include the effective implementation of the Armenia-EU Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement, as well as the development of new directions of cooperation.

Minister Mirzoyan touched upon the steps undertaken by the Government of the Republic of Armenia to address the needs and rights of the Armenian population forcibly displaced from their homeland resulting from the ethnic cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh by Azerbaijan.
