Armenia is delaying negotiations on creation of transport route from Azerbaijan to Nakhijevan: Ambassador of Russia to Azerbaijan

February 12,2024 19:01

For various, not very clear reasons, the Armenian side is delaying the negotiations on the creation of a transport route between the main territory of Azerbaijan and Nakhijevan, Russian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Mikhail Evdokimov told “Izvestiya”.

He emphasized that this topic is very important for Azerbaijan and noted. “It is the existence of a stable transport route, transport routes between the main territory of Azerbaijan and Nakhijevan. During the first Karabakh war, all communications were interrupted, and electricity supply to Nakhijevan was stopped. Therefore, for Azerbaijan, the safety of the route, which is approximately 46 km, is not an abstract topic.”

According to the Ambassador, there are tunnels and a bridge on this route.

“The Russian Federation was ready to quickly restore it at its own expense, but for various reasons, which are not clear to me, the Armenian side is delaying the negotiations. As a result, last year, Baku and Tehran signed an agreement on the construction of a railway through the territory of Iran. The road there is a little longer, 60 km or more, the route is more difficult, but the work is going on. All these years, automobile cargo transportation between Azerbaijan and Nakhijevan passed through the territory of Iran.

Besides, this is the route to Turkey. Now the main thing is to build a railway from Turkey to Nakhijevan, a double line is planned: European and Soviet. According to that, we will have the opportunity to transport goods from Russia to Turkey through the territory of Azerbaijan, Iran and Nakhijevan,” said Ambassador Evdokimov.
