March 02,2024 11:15

Chaired by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, a consultation was held, during which issues related to the infrastructure of the cultural and educational clusters of the “Academic City” were discussed.

The members of the Board of Trustees of the “Academic City” Foundation, Stephan Schütz, Executive Partner at Gerkan, Marg and Partners architectural company, which is in charge of the Master Plan of the Academic City, and heads of concerned departments participated in the consultation.

Stephan Schütz, Executive Partner of GMP International, noted that the clusters were designed with the possibility of further development and expansion. According to him, the area is not flat, there is a slope and there is a problem of accessibility. “We must provide access to all buildings. We have two different clusters, educational and cultural, and then a central area that will be pedestrianized, excluding any traffic. We tried to distribute the buildings in such a way that attractive areas should be built around the squares. Surrounding roads and green spaces are oriented towards central entrances, there will be green spaces, parks, other facilities and key structures. People should feel comfortable there, so we should also bring green zones and water areas to the “Academic City”, Stephan Schütz noted.

Rector of the National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia, Yeghiazar Vardanyan, noted that during the past period, the university made calculations regarding the utility resources required for the Academic City. “In other words, we can already accurately say how much water, irrigation, gas, electricity is required. We can already carry out works in this direction,” he noted.

At the same time, the rector added that they developed a proposal-concept of roads to the Academic City, which was also discussed with the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures and Yerevan Municipality. The concept features the maximum of all possibilities. “According to the concept, the access of vehicles to the Academic City should be limited as much as possible, it is planned that the flow of traffic from the regions to the “Academic City” should not go through Yerevan, trying to avoid traffic jams as much as possible,” he said.

Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Gnel Sanosyan noted that in terms of the transport system, the concept is based on two things. “Firstly, not to put extra burden on Yerevan, secondly, to approach the “Academic City” by as many roads as possible. We share the idea of a circular road, which provides additional opportunities,” said the minister.

In turn, Prime Minister Pashinyan welcomed the idea of circular traffic. “Last time we agreed that according to our logic, only supply vehicles should enter the Academic City, no other vehicle should enter. If we open the entrance, also taking into account the nuances of our reality, there will be a rush of traffic. Only vehicles bringing some goods should enter. A special procedure should be developed there,” the Prime Minister emphasized.

Next, the issues related to the organization of subway, railway and electric transport traffic to the “Academic City” were addressed.

Prime Minister Pashinyan instructed the officials to present a feasibility study in order to provide a more detailed and thorough solution to the issues of road infrastructure.

Issues related to the possibilities and perspectives of the development of the “Hayfilm” film studio adjacent to the “Academic City” were also discussed.
