Those called by God

May 28,2024 15:20

Axel Bakunts, Avetik Isahakyan, Manuk Abeghyan… the list of great Armenians educated at the Gevorgian Seminary of Etchmiadzin goes on. These individuals were not only educated here but went on to educate future generations. Thanks to the activities of this theological university for more than a century, educational culture, pedagogy, science, church, and spiritual life have flourished in Armenia.

“The main function and mission of the seminary is to train ministers of the Armenian Church. This vision has been clearly formulated since the 1980s when one of the brightest figures of the Armenian Church, Archbishop Malachias Ormanyan, the Patriarch of Constantinople, taught at the Gevorgyan Seminary for the first time. At the request of the Catholicos of the time, he also articulated this vision: to prepare educated and developed clergymen for the Armenian Church. Today, the Gevorgyan Seminary is committed to this important work under the clear direction of Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II,” the seminary’s inspector, Shahe Archimandrit Ananyan, told Aravot.am.

The age limit for admission to the seminary is 18-22 years. God’s call has gathered here not only young people who have just finished school but also those who already have higher education, ranging from firefighters to film directors.

Gevorgyan Seminary closely cooperates with numerous theological universities and spiritual centers abroad. Thanks to memorandums and agreements already signed with the theological universities of Warsaw, Moscow, and New York, there have been exchanges of students and literature, organization of lectures, joint international conferences, and mutual visits of professors for years. In the near future, Gevorgyan Seminary will also discuss the possibility of signing a contract with the Theological Faculty of Halle University.
