“As a result of the demarcation, the main gas pipeline through which the Republic of Armenia imports natural gas from the Russian Federation via the territory of Georgia is under serious threat. We are talking about the gas pipeline in the Red Bridge, Sevkar, Berd section, a part of which is actually under the control of the enemy today,” energy expert Vahe Davtyan said at the “Tavush for the Motherland” gathering in the yard of St. Anna Church.
He mentioned that the logistics of the gas pipeline should be changed by about 15 km, which is associated with large costs. “If this enclave logic continues on our southern border as well, i.e., in Syunik, we will find ourselves in an enclave state in terms of energy. The power transmission line connecting Iran to Armenia will be called into question, etc. And the officials here are talking about the import of natural gas from Azerbaijan.”
He stated that the RA energy system, especially the gas transport system, is currently quite diversified.
“One is the northern gas pipeline, which was recently removed from the list of strategic infrastructures of Georgia, and we are already hearing responses from Azerbaijan that they are ready to acquire the Georgian part of the gas pipeline, effectively controlling the gas supply to Armenia. The second is the gas pipeline from Iran, whose capacity is small, at best we import up to 400 million cubic meters annually. We have a direction that is not particularly used. The problem is not diversification, but the Azerbaijanization of the system.”
