EU to help Armenia deal with consequences of recent floods

EU Ambassador to Armenia Vassilis Maragos announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the  European Union Civil Protection Mechanism had been activated following a request for support from the Armenian government in the wake of devastating floods.

“The European Union and like-minded partners ready to support Armenia overcoming huge damages in the Northern Regions, due to recent floods,” Vasillis Maragos wrote on X. “Welcoming first experts from ECHO [Humanitarian Aid department of the European Commission] and Switzerland already on the ground.”

The EU Civil Protection Mechanism was established by the European Commission in October 2001. The Mechanism aims to strengthen cooperation between the EU countries and 10 participating states, including Moldova and Ukraine, on civil protection to improve prevention, preparedness, and response to disasters. However, when an emergency hits, any country can request assistance via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
