And Again, About Dignity

June 11,2024 10:30

In the recent European Parliament elections, “right-wing” parties achieved considerable success. Notably, in France and Germany, these parties surpassed the ruling forces. This prompted French President Emmanuel Macron to question the trust in his policies. He dissolved the parliament, stating that he cannot pretend nothing happened.

It’s not that Macron doesn’t want to stay in power; he simply realizes that he cannot lead effectively from a “weak chair.” Disrespectful leadership is ineffective. The French society will not respect officials and deputies who cling to their seats and mandates.

You might say that Pashinyan also held extraordinary elections in 2021 and won. Yes, he won by promising the “peaceful de-occupation” of Shushi and Hadrut, as well as ensuring the rights and security of Armenians living in Artsakh. Isn’t it worth checking how citizens feel about the government that has not fulfilled these promises?

I do not exclude the possibility that even now such a government could still be “beneficial” for the majority of Armenians.

This brings us to the dignity of citizens. It is a disgrace to me that the enemy destroys our churches and graves. It is also a shame that the leadership of my country considers that enemy to be “constructive,” at least in some sense.

It is a disgrace that the enemy forces you to change the laws of your country. It is a disgrace when he threatens another war if you have this or that weapon. It is a disgrace that he holds your citizens captive.

All this seems OK for Pashinyan and the CC. Suppose they are blinded by mandates and seats, striving to enjoy them for a few more weeks or months. Even the “independent” deputy elected on the opposition list does not raise a voice and has tightly embraced his mandate, fearing that the government will “use kompromat” against him. The opposition MPs are also not in a hurry to give up their mandates, despite giving speeches.

And what about ordinary citizens? In my impression, defeat and humiliation do not hurt most of them. They fear the “return of the former” (which is unlikely) and war (which is real, regardless) more than a slavish life. The problem lies with them.
