Will Pashinyan Swear to Change the Constitution?

July 03,2024 13:30

Ilham Aliyev, while accepting the credentials of the newly appointed ambassador of Canada, first complained that many countries did not condemn the “occupation of Karabakh.” Now, even when they express their support for the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, it is not particularly important because Aliyev himself was able to “crush” the Armenian army.

The president of Azerbaijan is satisfied with “demarcation,” as everything is obviously going according to his wishes. Aliyev conditions the return of Artsakh residents to their homes with the return of Azerbaijanis to “West Azerbaijan” (which is how the “constructive neighbor” refers to our state). It is clear that if such a thing happens, the destruction of our state will proceed at an accelerated pace.

But the most important part of his speech is, of course, the conclusion: no peace treaty will be signed unless the Constitution of Armenia is changed.

The representatives of our authorities say that the Constitution can only be changed in two years because its draft is not even ready. Yet, it is possible to “finalize” the text of the peace agreement in the coming months, which Aliyev has also confirmed.

Implementation of the demand to change the Constitution thus appears to be delayed. Are there compromises here? I think yes. Pashinyan can, swallowing another disgrace, swear to Aliyev that in the future the RA Basic Law will be changed according to the wishes of the President of Azerbaijan. It is possible that if the oath is given with the guarantee of representatives of world leaders, Aliyev will believe it. Or the oath will be formulated during the “initialization of the provisions.”

There is no need to explain anything to the “people of Armenia” (those whom Pashinyan calls so). It is enough to say, for example, that this Constitution was adopted during the time of the “formers” and with falsehoods.

The problem, however, is that apart from changing the Constitution, Aliyev has a rather long list of demands. And the list is endless. The list will end only when the state of Armenia disappears.
