Age limit for being a surrogate mother to be increased from 35 to 38

It is proposed to make abortion accessible and safe by providing provisions for medical abortion. The current law only provided for instrumental interruption. The deputy of the RA NA Civil Contract Faction Narek Zeynalyan said this while presenting the package of draft laws on Making Addenda and Amendments to the Law on Human Reproductive Health and Reproductive Rights authored by him and his colleagues Lusine Badalyan, Tatevik Gasparyan and Lena Nazaryan in the extraordinary session of the National Assembly on July 11.

According to the Chair of the Standing Committee on Health Care Narek Zeynalyan, the legislative initiative proposes to carry out abortion in medical organizations licensed for obstetrics and gynecology medical care and service in case of pregnancy up to 8 weeks, and in the case of abortion up to 22 weeks only in hospital conditions, under the supervision of a doctor.

The package regulates the process of using the surrogate mother service. The age limit for becoming a surrogate mother was also revised, increasing it from 35 to 38 years old.

The age limit of persons having the right to use assisted reproductive technologies has been increased, being set up to 55 years old.

Provisions have been added regarding the preservation, export, import and destruction of gametes.

Hripsime Hunanyan presented the endorsement of the Head Committee.

According to the RA Deputy Minister of Health Armen Gasparyan, the regulations proposed by the legislative initiative were debated with all the concerned parties and were approved.

The initiative was adopted in the first reading.
