“No European official is waiting for us in the European Union. Ukraine and Georgia also wanted to become EU members. Have they become members??” – Arthur Hambardzumyan

Aravot.am asked Artur Hambardzumyan, an opposition figure and management specialist from Gyumri, for his opinion about Armenia’s desire and possibility of becoming a member of the European Union.

“No European official is waiting for us in the European Union, in Europe. Europe or the collective West, including the United States, just used this area. We have been interesting to the West to the extent that we can harm Russia. The bitter experience of Ukraine is before our eyes. In 2014, when there was a coup in Ukraine, people were invited to the Maidan. One of the goals of all that was for Ukraine to join the European Union after a short time. Did Ukraine join the European Union? Did Ukraine become a member of NATO? Of course, it didn’t.

Another example is Georgia. People in this country were striving for Europe for years and making some reforms. Did it become a member of NATO or the European Union? By the way, I must say that serious reforms were taking place in Georgia during Saakashvili’s time. In many cases in the Republic of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan was compared with Saakashvili, but that comparison is absolutely inappropriate. It would be more accurate to compare Nikol Pashinyan with Gamsakhurdia,” says Artur Hambardzumyan.

According to him, all this happened in front of our eyes, and now some “adventurers” in the Republic of Armenia want to hold a referendum to join the European Union, which is at least ridiculous.

“Armenia has not been a member of the European Union and will not become one. Turkey has long sought to join the European Union. I remember the words of one of the presidents of France about why Turkey does not become a member of the European Union. It does not, because it is not located in Europe, although a part of western Turkey is located in Europe. Even more so for Armenia. But since there is a problem of carrying out some actions against Russia in this area, they can continuously use the issue of membership in the European Union,” Artur Hambardzumyan is convinced.
