Did you know that the magnificent Yereruyk Basilica is part of the U.S. Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation initiative?
The 4th-5th century Armenian church near the village of Anipemza in the Shirak region exemplifies Armenia’s early Christian architecture and rich historical heritage. Despite facing challenges from natural and human factors, this site remains a central focus for preservation efforts aimed at safeguarding Armenia’s cultural legacy for future generations. Yereruyk Basilica has been on UNESCO’s Preliminary List of World Heritage since 1995.
Since 2005, the U.S. Embassy in Yerevan has supported 15 conservation projects with $1.6 million in funding through the Ambassadors Fund. The Yereruyk initiative, supported by $175,000 from the U.S. Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation, includes fortifying the monument’s walls, replacing eroded stones, installing a drainage system to manage water flow, enhancing the surrounding environment, and preparing the site for the exhibition of monumental stones.
This preservation effort underscores the United States’ commitment to supporting the conservation of Armenia’s cultural heritage.
