I want to thank you, the executive and legislative bodies of Uruguay, for your always objective assessment and attitude in matters that are very sensitive for us. The members of the Friendship Group Sergey Bagratyan, Tatevik Gasparyan, Elinar Vardanyan and Arman Ghazaryan attended the meeting as well.

Ishkhan Saghatelyan highly appreciated the decades-old Armenian-Uruguayan friendly relations and noted that there is a great potential to develop them. In this context, the Head of the Friendship Group emphasized the role of the Armenian community in Uruguay, which, according to him, can be an additional bridge and stimulus in the development of bilateral relations.

The President of the House of Representatives of Uruguay Ana Olivera and the Vice-President of the House of Representatives of Uruguay Pedro Khisdonyan who has Armenian roots, highlighted the role of the Armenian community in the social and political life of Uruguay, underscored its unity, positively assessed the opening of embassies in both countries.

The Armenian parliamentarians thanked the representatives of the country that was the first to officially recognize and condemn the Armenian Genocide on April 6, 1965, and talked about the challenges our country is facing and the ongoing aggressive policy of Azerbaijan.

Touching upon the policy of ethnic cleansing carried out by Azerbaijan against the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh in 2023, Ishkhan Saghatelyan noted that there are dozens of Armenian prisoners of war in Baku prisons and Azerbaijani troops – in the sovereign territories of Armenia. “Despite the statements about peace, it is obvious that Azerbaijan is not inclined to peace and presents new demands to Armenia,” he said.

Clear and targeted evaluations by the friendly countries, as well as the implementation of steps to release the Armenian prisoners of war through possible channels and means, were emphasized.

“If in 2020, during the war, the international community gave correct and targeted assessments of Azerbaijan’s actions, it would at least restrain its further steps and actions, which continued after the war and continue to this day,” Ishkhan Saghatelyan said in particular.

Reference was also made to other issues of mutual interest.
