EU Neighbours. To celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the EU Delegation to Armenia supported an event organised by the Armenian NGO Agata,with a diverse programme aimed at highlighting the talents, potential, and challenges faced by people with disabilities.
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated on 3 December. This year’s topic is ‘Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future’.
The events in Armenia kicked off with the premiere of the thought-provoking performance Beyond the Shadows, by the Gyumri Reflection Theatre. This performance shed light on the often-overlooked experiences of individuals with disabilities.
Agata NGO also opened a photo exhibition ‘Leadership and Inclusion Begin with Us’, showcasing the achievements and aspirations of people with disabilities. The exhibition aims to inspire and demonstrate that disability is not a barrier to success.

A special presentation summarising media coverage on disability issues was also held, highlighting the importance of accurate and sensitive reporting.
The event was initiated by the UNFPA and ‘Agate’ NGO as part of ‘ATHENA: Advancing the Human Rights Agenda and Enhancing National Authorities’ project, co-funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP, UNFPA and UNICEF.
The media awards ceremony was carried out as part of the ‘Leading Equality and Access for Disabilities’ project, funded by the European Union and implemented by World Vision Armenia, Full Life NGO, Agate NGO and Source Foundation.
