Perspectives of expansion of ties in defense sphere between Armenia and Greece discussed

On April 17, the Chair of the RA NA Standing Committee on Defense and Security Andranik Kocharyan received the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Greece to our country Christos Sofianopoulos.

During the meeting, the perspectives for further strengthening the traditional friendly relations between Armenia and Greece, as well as expanding ties at the parliamentary level and active cooperation between similar committees, were discussed.

Reference was made to the Armenian-Greek military cooperation, which had been effective since the 1990s. Andrniak Kocharyan stated that that collaboration is also laid on firm bases now: The Greece-Armenia military cooperation programme confirms the strong military ties between the two countries, it includes numerous activities. The importance of conducting joint military exercises was emphasized

According to the Committee Chair, Armenia is an Associate Member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, and the perspectives for Armenian-Greek cooperation are also important on this platform. In this context, the Committee Chair documented that among NATO member countries, the largest number of Armenian officers receive education in Greece and spoke about the effectiveness of the educational component of military cooperation with Greece.

Opinions were exchanged also on the regional security issues. Andranik Kocharyan presented to the guest the procedure of negotiations on signing the peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the normalisation process of relations between Armenia and Türkiye. The Ambassador in his turn underscored that the Government of Greece welcomes the efforts of Armenia aimed at peace and highlights the signing of peace agreement. According to Christos Sofianopoulos, they are for the international law, the inviolability of the borders and sovereignty.

The interlocutors discussed issues on holding NATO PA Rose-Roth Seminar being planned in Armenia in autumn.
