Over 300 NGOs Urge EU to Act Against Hungary’s Anti-Civil Society Draft Law

June 03,2025 13:39

Over 300 NGOs have addressed an open letter to the EU leadership, urging an immediate response to Hungary’s controversial draft law on “Transparency of Public Life.”

On May 13, a member of Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party submitted this new draft law that threatens civil society, independent media, and human rights protection.

The draft law would allow the government to:
Target and dissolve organizations based on “foreign influence,”
Deprive them of domestic funding,
Control financial transfers,
Make decisions without judicial oversight.
The draft law blatantly violates EU laws on freedom of speech, association, free movement of capital, and data protection.

The NGOs call on the EU leadership to:
Apply to the EU Court of Justice for interim measures,
Urge the Hungarian government to withdraw the draft law,
Support activating Article 7 proceedings against Hungary in the EU Council.
The open letter is in the comment field.
