On June 3, an event titled “Roots of Atrocities: Systematic State-Level Discrimination and Ethnic Cleansing of Armenians in Azerbaijan” was held in Vienna, organized by the Union of Informed Citizens and “For Equal Rights” NGOs.

The event was held within the framework of the OSCE/ODIHR Human Dimensions Supplementary Meetings in Vienna.

The speakers at the event were Arseny Aghajanyan, who was forcibly displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh in 2023, Arpi Harutyunyan, a representative of the Democracy Development Foundation, Arlet Zakaryan, an attorney accredited in France and Austria, Gayane Abrahamyan, President of “For Equal Rights” NGO, and Daniel Ioannisyan, Programs Coordinator at Union of Informed Citizens NGO.

During the event, the guests were presented with numerous examples of recorded cases of Armenophobia and xenophobia in Azerbaijan, as well as evidence confirming the involvement of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in encouraging Armenophobia in his country. Parallels were drawn between the hateful and discriminatory rhetoric of Ilham Aliyev in Azerbaijan and other authoritarian regimes.

The event was also attended by refugees, the victims of ethnic cleansing, who shared their stories.
The representatives of non-governmental organizations also spoke at the plenary session, addressing examples of organized Armenophobia in Azerbaijan under the leadership of President Aliyev, as well as hate speech, the ethnic cleansing organized in Nagorno-Karabakh, and the need to sign a peace treaty.
