A Small Trouble Against the Backdrop of Tragedy

August 01,2025 11:00

As is well known, the ideological—and, I would even say, organizational—foundation of this government is hatred and hostility. The targets may vary: the “former” authorities, Russians, clergymen, Samvel Karapetyan, or any other figure. What matters is keeping the fire of hatred burning. In my opinion, the Prime Minister of Armenia wakes up each morning wondering what kind of Facebook status to post to provoke a scandal, a dispute, or a public frenzy—something that will inspire both fans and critics to write the dirtiest, most offensive posts about one another.

One of the main objects of this hatred is the people of Artsakh, which, of course, has its own logic. Those responsible for their current condition refuse to admit their guilt—and when that’s the case, the best defense is always a good offense. The authorities try to convince us that the people of Artsakh do not deserve help, that they are agents of Russian influence, that they want to overthrow our “nationally elected and esteemed” Prime Minister. And, in general, that we should first clarify whether they are even Armenians.

This is the wave of hatred that the authorities periodically direct against our compatriots—and it is the height of cynicism, considering their current plight.

Some 120,000 people have lost everything: their homes, their jobs, the graves of their parents and grandparents. The state has “forgotten” them, as if even the small allowances provided were too generous. In truth, the authorities seem to want them to leave Armenia as quickly as possible. Their situation is genuinely tragic. You’ve probably seen images of them tying a closet to the roof of a run-down Zhiguli, just to drive to some remote district—because only there can they find a corner to rent.

…Against this tragic backdrop, the fact that Aravot is being evicted from the Press Building is a minor inconvenience, hardly worth mentioning at length.

By the way, Aravot turns 31 today.
