The newly released 2024 U.S. State Department Country Report on Human Rights Practices: Azerbaijan paints a disturbing picture of a country where fundamental freedoms are systematically crushed, political opponents are silenced, and torture is routine.
This is not speculation, this is the official account of the U.S. government, documenting:
- Targeted ethnic cleansing of Nagorno-Karabakh’s Armenian population between 2020–2023.
- Destruction of cultural heritage in Armenian-populated areas.
- Routine torture including electric shocks, beatings, and sexual violence, with total impunity for perpetrators.
- 40+ journalists and activists jailed in one year, many on fabricated charges.
- Transnational repression, including killings, targeting political opponents or critics.
The report warns of a deeply entrenched system of abuse and impunity at every level of Azerbaijani government.
