WFP provides EU-funded cash assistance for food and psychosocial care to refugees in Armenia

December 08,2025 16:53

Yerevan, Armenia – The humanitarian support from the European Union (EU) through its Humanitarian Aid Operations has allowed the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to help refugees residing in Armavir and Aragatsotn regions, meet their basic food and nutritional needs and access psychosocial care in Armenia.

More than 115,000 refugees fled to Armenia from Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2023. This sudden influx prompted the WFP to provide critical assistance, including food support and psychosocial services for refugees and vulnerable populations.
In October 2025, WFP provided final cash-based transfers to nearly 4,000 refugees in Armavir and Aragatsotn regions, enabling families to purchase food of their choice. In partnership with the Armenian Association of Social Workers (AASW), psychosocial services were also provided to over 2,000 people.

As part of its integrated approach, WFP organised educational sessions on healthy nutrition and financial awareness for refugees, helping them to make informed decisions about their diets and manage their resources effectively.

“Food assistance is a lifeline for families who have lost everything and providing it through bank cards is a true example of dignified support,” said Leila Meliouh, WFP Representative and Country Director in Armenia. “This approach empowers people to make their own choices while restoring a sense of normalcy. Together with the European Union, the Government of Armenia, and local partners, we addressed the immediate needs of vulnerable populations in the country, ensuring timely and effective support when it mattered most.”

The United Nations World Food Programme has been working in Armenia since 1994 to improve food security and resilience. WFP supports the School Feeding Programme, promotes sustainable agriculture, and partners with government and communities to strengthen social protection systems. Through emergency response and long-term initiatives, WFP helps vulnerable populations access nutritious food and build a more food-secure future.
