What Shocks European Leaders — and What Does Not

March 05,2026 11:00

The leaders of Germany, France and the United Kingdom have issued a statement declaring that they are “shocked” by Iran’s “indiscriminate and disproportionate” strikes against countries in the Middle East. The three European leaders called on Iran to put an end to these “reckless attacks.”

In other words: you are being struck — but you must not respond.

Apparently, the Israeli-American strike on February 26 in the Iranian city of Minab, which reportedly killed at least 160 girls aged 7 to 12, did not shock those leaders. One must assume that they consider those strikes “proportionate” and justified.

There are values and principles that stand above politics — including geopolitics. For me, a bad political regime is not a justification for attacking a country and killing people. I find such reasoning no more convincing than Russia’s tale that Ukraine wanted to join NATO, and therefore Russian troops invaded.

Aggression has no justification.

It is deeply regrettable that even in Armenia there are “pro-Russian” or “pro-American” individuals who, at least at first glance, are not cannibals — yet welcome the killing of innocent people in Ukraine or Iran.

Even more puzzling, to put it mildly, is when this is done by people who are supposed to be advocates of European values — the compatriots, let us recall, of Immanuel Kant, Voltaire and John Locke.

If we continue along the logical path of today’s European leaders, we might end up justifying the Nazi concentration camps or Gulag. After all, Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin also had their “reasons” for killing people.

And after all this, I allow myself to doubt that the European Union truly wants peace and democracy for Armenia. What they want is the reproduction of Pashinyan’s rule — which is neither peace-loving nor, even more so, democratic.

… Saudi Arabia has a regime just as bad as Iran’s. Why is that country not being struck?
