At the UNGA80 Commemorative Meeting marking the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Ambassador Paruyr Hovhannisyan, Permanent Representative of Armenia to the United Nations, reaffirmed Armenia’s commitment to combating racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and all forms of intolerance.
He noted that racism and xenophobia remain pervasive, continuing to undermine democratic institutions, deepen inequalities, and threaten peace and security. He also expressed concern over the growing prevalence of hate speech, including in digital spaces. The importance of comprehensive policies, effective institutional frameworks, and sustained international cooperation was stressed.
Ambassador Hovhannisyan emphasized that Armenia, mindful of its own historical experience, recognizes the devastating consequences of hatred and intolerance when left unaddressed.
Highlighting national efforts, he noted that Armenia actively supports initiatives aimed at addressing systemic racism and strengthening accountability, while maintaining close cooperation with relevant international mechanisms. He also highlighted the role of education, including Armenia’s “Education for Peace” initiative.
